Thankgiving

It's always weird being the odd man out. This Thanksgiving was one of those "odd man out" situations. For the last two years we have eaten over at my in law's house. My father in law got remarried about four years ago, so, now when family gets together, it's all his wife's family. They are nice, but still, it's just not the same. My husband's brother doesn't even come over because his family doesn't get along with the new wife's family. We don't get to see any of Mr. Cowboy's Aunts or cousins and my family is way too far away to go and visit. It just doesn't feel like a holiday. I was asked to make mashed potatoes. I was all freaking out about how many I should peel and mash. My potato peeler broke after the first potato. But some how I make it through, thanks to duct tape. I made a small bot of mashed potatoes, and I brought home about the same amount I took. Next year I am making instant mashed potatoes. Nobody here in the south eats them. Weird, I know! And when it was time to eat, by the time I walked next door, they already started with out me and my kids, and my husband wasn't back from work. It just wasn't the family fun day I was expecting. Not like the Thanksgivings I am used to. If I didn't live next door, I would start my own family Thanksgiving dinners. But besides missing family, the food was really good. We had lots of turkey and ham. They were both really yummy. And I am very thankful to have food to eat and for people to spend the day with. And the best thing about eating a lot of food, is taking a nap afterwards. Cowpokette just tossed out all her bibs and climbed in the drawer. She was plum tired. I hope every one had a wonderful Thanksgiving!! Oh, and last night Mr. Cowboy and I found out that our septic tank is back washing fumes into our bathroom. It really stinks. I have been blaming it on Mr. Cowboy, poor guy. Hopefully Mr. Cowboy can just flush the system and it will get better. All fingers and toes crossed.

It isn't Thanksgiving without mashed potatoes. Gah!
Sorry about the family stuff not being the way you'd like.
That's one of the reasons I prefer that holidays are spent with only my immediate family of 5. They are small intimate, low-key, low stress and enjoyable. Best of all, no expectations, means no disappointment.

This year, as you know, I was recovering from my illness, so I needed things to be low stress and no pressure, so we had a pretty good time together, and I was even able to eat a little bit of the things I cooked, too. That was a blessing in of itself.

Little Cowpokette in the drawer fast asleep just makes me go awwwwww! Is that the cutest photo ever?

Well we sure did have a big ol pot of mashed potatoes over here. YUM! Ya'll should have come here for the day. We had (and still have)plenty.

Dear Andrea, the good thing I see is how you still could give thanks amidst the disappointment. Way to go! It does indeed make it awkward being next door and all. It probably would be nicer if you did your own thing. My husband and I began doing out 'own' thing for Thanksgiving when our kids were small. We would travel up here to the ranch and just have a thanksgiving with our immediate family of 5. Best to you and your adorable family.

Those are seriously cute photos. Last year we had our septic nightmare when the entire leach system had to be replaced. Now we drop these little packets into the toilet every month to keep things flowing, and we're going to make sure we over-pump the damn thing. I had to board my horses elsewhere while a tractor dug up the paddock to lay down the pipes. Not fun. I hope yours only needs a minor fix.

I feel your left out far away from the family pain. I don't know what's worse, people who don't eat potatoes, or people who think unless you have 3 courses of Jello it's just not right. Oh well. The things we put up with to be married.

It seems odd to me that no one would eat the mashed potatoes, that's the first thing to go here. At least you didn't have far to go and there was no mess to clean up. I think the picture of cowpokette is adorable. Hope the stinky stuff clears up soon, that must be miserable.

Oh you can send those potatoes this way, I missed them this year. Baked is what we had at the inlaws. It was a good dinner. I still had to do dishes? he he

They started dinner without you?!?! How RUDE!! I'm very grateful that I have a large and wonderful family to spend Thanksgiving with, but sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be more fun to just stay at home with my man and make it our own little holiday...and then I think "Nah, we have all year to do that!"

Cowpokette was SO cute in that drawer! I think I used to sleep in a drawer (like as my first crib) when I was little!
Glad your turkey day was yummy even if it didn't quite turn out the way you were hopin'!

When my father married my (evil) stepmother, that is when our family gatherings ended. I always hosted Thanksgiving and my parents used to come over and get along well even though they were divorced and then ..well.. Now my siblings live out of state and things aren't the same..

No matter how sad and disappointed you get, do NOT make instant mashed potatoes! ;)

Maybe you can have your own celebration next year at your house--only invite people you want to see.

Hope your Christmas is merrier than your Thanksgiving was.

You make me laugh so hard! Baby girl is the cutest kid out there, and I have 4 girls. And blaming your hubby for the stinky bathroom is too much. I was rolling on the floor, my hubby thinks I am nuts. I haven't slept well in a few weeks cause of the baby so maybe I'm slap happy. But you always are positive and yes I agree with Laura and what is with the instant potatoes? The peeler breaking, that would be my luck. Your a trooper and we did miss everyone on turkey day.
