Saturday Evening

Hurricane Ike hit us at about 2 in the morning. By 10 am there was just some wind. Then by 5 pm things calmed down to about 15 mph winds. With some gusts, but they were not bad. That is when Mr. Cowboy, his brother, my father in law, and Mr. William all headed to the barn to take down the flapping tin. Mr. William climbed right up on the roof and started to dismantle it. I don't think you could have caught me up there on the barn roof with no winds let alone gusty winds. I am very terrified of heights. Mr. Cowboy got up on his big ladder to help pry the screws out of the boards. Just look at him. Look how comfortable he is up there. I know that I can not climb a small step stool, so, I was no help on Saturday. Get after it, Mr. Cowboy. You are my hero. It didn't take the three guys long to get that tin unhooked. Then they all said, "Look out belooooowww!" That sure made kids and dogs scatter. The tin flew down to the ground. It made all sorts of noise. Bang, bang, BANG!! We had an audience watching our destruction. They stood watching and nibbling as the hammering went on and on. Then the tin fell. It kinda got their attention. Prince didn't seem to mind all the noise. He is a one and a half year old painted draft horse. His name is Prince or Goliath. Which ever you prefer. I like Prince. But that is just me. Prince is like a giant lap dog. He is so sweet. It's hard to believe he is only one and a half years old. Prince just wanted to be petted all over. He is a people horse. He likes people. Some horses don't like to be around people, but Prince does. Ozzie watched from a distance. Just look at that belly getting bigger. I am so proud of my little Ozzie for putting on some weight. But mean while on the roof.......Mr. Cowboy some how made it over there. Yikes!! He was trying to knock down rotten boards. Sounds nice and safe. Then there is Mr. Cowboy's brother. Hmmmm. Yeah....sometimes you must wonder about him. I think there was way too much testosterone on the roof. "I'm the King of the Crow Bar!!" Yeah, guys are defiantly strange. Then there is this one. I keep telling him the kids get their attitudes from him and he doesn't believe me. I just don't understand. Mean while back on the ground, I was trying to entertain Beaux. He is a big boy. Beaux is about a year old now. He is a lot of dog. My brother in law had a difficult time with him on the leash. I don't think I need a dog like that. I like nice and mellow. He sure is a pretty one though. I am not sure what is going on with his back. He has a dip in it right below his shoulder blades. Will that go away as he gets older? I really have no idea. I do not know much about large breed dogs. I stick to horses. Speaking of horses, they got board with us humans. Lady and Ozzie took off to the pasture. They decided that they were not going to be let in. Lady is the mare on the left. She is my husband's barrel horse. Well, she does it all but poles. She is really long and hasn't gotten the hang of poles really well. Lady was born here, in that there field. She now is 6 years old. She is a good mare. She has had two babies that were big just like her. But the sad thing is that Lady needs to find a new home. Lady has allergies and she needs to move up north. She is awesome here in the winter. But come the summer time she will cough and get all stuffy. She defiantly is allergic to something down here. And the strange thing is, she only started that last year. But she is my father in laws horse and he is going to try to sell her so she can have a better life. On my way out of the barn I saw Little Cowpoke's tracks. He has such tiny feet. Then as I was about to leave, the boys were at it again. I think he was trying to get Misty's ear to look like his facial hair. I am not really sure what is going on there. I don't think Misty really knows either. They were catching the donkey's so they could be de-wormed.
Misty did not think that getting her worming paste was fun. Not at all. But Mr. Cowboy had a good time. He is such a dork. He was just tall enough to stand over the donkey. There was actually a bit of air between the donkey and him. He is such a dork. I love the donkey's hair. I think it makes her look like a surfer donkey. Then on the way back to the house I snapped a picture of Joe. Joe has gotten so big lately. Good night Joe! Now that I have written about three posts in one. I think I can throw my hands up and call it done.

Ozzie goes English

Since getting Ozzie back from the "trainer" I have been trying to get some weight put back on him. I also have been trying to exercise him so he can start building muscle. Because for all I know, for the 6 weeks that Ozzie was with the "trainer" all they did was walk. And let me tell ya, Ozzie sure is broke at the walk. That definitely is Ozzie's comfort zone. Since we took our round pen down for hurricane purposes I have been forced to actually lunge my horse. It is a good thing. It makes me work a bit.
So, here we are at a walk. He is very relaxed and comfortable. Oh, and I put on my dressage saddle on him to see how he would do with an English saddle on. He didn't mind it one bit. It is definitely his comfort zone. We trotted and cantered this direction and then turned around. This way is just the same. An easy going walk. I sometimes have to convince him to walk a bit faster. He is lazy with a capital L. Then we picked up the pace a bit. Ozzie is a great trotter. He stays pretty relaxed at the trot. He does go a bit fast at first but then he calms down and settles into his 20 meter circle. Then it's hold on tight, it's time for the canter. He defiantly has not done this in a while. He used to lope off so nice and quiet. Oh how things have changed. He pulls like crazy and his head is all up and his back is all sorts of hallow. Ozzie likes to suck towards the barn. Like a magnetic pull. It draws him towards the barn. And then all I have to do to make him stop is say, "Whoa". Ozzie is really easy to stop. He will park it and then take one small step to the inside and look at me. He will wait like this for as long as I stand and stare at him. "Why hello there Mom! What are we doing next?" "Uhm...Mom? What ya doing?" What a fabulous shot of an ill fitting halter! And I went to college for this!! I did take the halter up two holes and it fit him just fine. I like my halters to fit snug under the throat and then right below the cheek bone. Ozzie is so sweet. He will almost put his nose in the dirt so that Little Cowpoke can take his halter off of him. Ozzie has wonderful eyes. He always looks so kind and soft. Ozzie is really a laid back three year old. Now if I could just get some weight on him I would be in business. After I lunged him I took him to the hose for a quick shower. Ozzie has never minded water. He just doesn't want it to get his face wet. But I don't ever listen to him. Ozzie always gets his face wet. "Please no, not my face!!! I hate to get my face wet!!" You know Ozzie is worried when he shows you the white in his eye. He soon calms down when I move with the hose further away from his head. Ozzie is really wonderful at ground tying. He doesn't even get tempted to eat. I think he looks happy to be home. He gets fed twice a day with hay and then he gets 8 hours of turn out a day. But he does have to work. I lunge him every morning and I ride him at night. We gotta work on those rump muscles. I think I have put a good 50 lbs on him since I got him home. You now can not count every single rib. You can still see some but not all of them. I put Ozzie on a low protein high fat diet. He gets Purina's Horse Chow 100 mixed with Purina's Amplify supplement. Then those are mixed with Country Acre's 12% pellet feed. He has to have some protein. Oh, and I almost forgot. He also gets some beet pulp. I tried to feed him some bran but he won't eat it. So, he gets beet pulp. He loves it. I think it has put some meat on his bones. I don't think he looks half bad. At least now he has a nice grass belly. I like a little belly, on my horse. I wish my little belly would go away. Except mine is not little, hee hee. Ozzie and I need to be on opposite diets. Oh, speaking of diets. I was at the feed store and an old country man told me if I wanted to put weight on my horse, I needed to feed him day old bred. My horse would be so fat and happy if I would feed him bread. All I could think of was how I felt after I ate way too much bread and then drank some water. Talk about bloated. I am not sure if feeding bread works or not, but when I came home I told my father in law and he said that it does work. I don't think I will ever know. I am not about to go out an buy old bread. Cowpokette likes to play in the dirt while I lunge Ozzie. She is a country girl to the bone. She loves to play in the dirt, mud, bugs, anything you name it. Shoes? What shoes? Who needs shoes? She is a good barn babe! Next time I will have to post some pictures of me riding Ozzie English. Let me tell ya, it wasn't pretty. I felt like I was all over the place. It's been about 2 years since my rump has been in an English saddle. Next time I do ride, I am going to put my close contact saddle on him, not that uncomfy dressage saddle. I will also try to find some pictures I have of Ozzie while he was with the "trainer" so you can see the weight difference.
**Don't mind my horrible cropping of photos, don't even begin to ask what I was trying to do. I really have no idea!!**

Hurricane Ike

Well, Ike came and now is leaving. The winds were about 50 mph sustained and then we would get gusts of wind up to about 80 mph. It was more fun than I could have ever imagined. Insert sarcasm. At night, I left my television on so when I would wake up I would know what was going on. I did not get much sleep. I was awake about once an hour. Then finally at 2:25 am the power went out. I was a bit nervous because the last thing I heard on the television was the weather man saying that there were tornado spottings about 20 miles from my house. So, then my roof was creaking and I could hear tin flying so I decided to move myself and the kids to the other side of the house. It was cooler over on that side of the house anyway. I stayed up listening to the radio until 4:30 am. I was then just too tired to stay awake and listen any more, so, I crashed. I was so grateful for 7 am and some sunshine. The night before Ike moved in Mr. Cowboy fastened down the hatches. Here are our front two windows. Mr. Cowboy didn't want to use clips on these windows because of the stucco. So, he made some supports and drove stakes into the ground. Theses are the clips that we use. You put four clips on one piece of wood. Then you simply push the wood into the window. It really works. The little old lady across the street from us used some tin to protect her windows. She left two days ago. She was not going to stay and wait this storm out. I on the other hand stayed for this one. Like I said, I was so grateful for the sunrise. When we woke up we ventured outside to see what the damage was.
It was still a bit windy. I think maybe 40 mph winds. I am not too sure. It was pretty windy. Big Cowpoke liked the wind. It wasn't raining, just really windy. Super Kids!! They will save the day. The wind came right around this corner and snapped our Crepe Myrtle tree right in half. Mr. Cowboy was sad. That was his favorite tree. We lost some tin. Most of the tin was off of my father in laws tool shed. One piece of tin came off the barn. So, that wasn't too bad. All during the night I could hear the tin banging up and down. I was so scared it was going to fly into my bedroom wall. Another reason why I moved to the other side of the house. We then got the generator working and turned the t.v. and fans on. The Cowpokes wanted to entertain me with some music. It was some beautiful music. It even put the dogs to sleep. This is Beaux. He is an American Bulldog. He is huge. He is a lot of dog. I am very convinced that I do not need a big dog like him. He spent the morning in his kennel. Beaux is a stud dog, he kept trying to...uhm......make nice with Brodi. Brodi didn't want to "make nice". It was a love hate relationship. Brodi dog was knocked out. I gave him some anti anxiety medicine. Normally Brodi would be laying on top of me and breathing in my face all during the storm. But with his meds, it was smooth sailing. Drugs are a beautiful thing. Well, for Brodi at least. Then let the games begin. The Wii games that is. Cousin Devin brought his Wii over for us to play. Uncle Shannon even got in on the games. Uncle Shannon was kind enough to stay with us last night. I was not all alone. I was really grateful for him staying with me and the Cowpokes. But anyway, I really like the Wii. It's so much fun. Cowpokette liked to watch. She was a being really good, being that it was about 80 degrees in the house. But with all the fans on it wasn't too bad. We had fun. The electricity is now back on and Mr. Cowboy came back from work at 2 pm. So, now we are all cool, calm, and collected. I thank the Lord for keeping us safe. I don't know how many prayers I said last night. I am not too sure I could stay through a bigger storm. I get scared for my kids. Even though they had no clue what was going on. They were all sleeping like the sweet angels they all are. But for my sanity. That is kinda important to keep. Thank you Ike for not totally destroying us. I send my thoughts and prayers to the people of East Texas. I have many friends who live over there and I hope they all made it out of this storm alright. Goodbye Ike, I can't say I will be missing you.
