Twilight Fan and Plan for Peanut

This is kind of a late post, but I forgot to post about it. I am not sure if any of you have read the Twilight Series of books. I read them and I really liked them. I saw the movie, which I thought was a bit off, but the books are really good. I am excited to see the second movie. They got a new director and it's supposed to be better. But anyway. There are a lot of people out there who are really obsessed with the Twilight movie. And my niece is one of them. She is 12 and she loves Edward. So, for Christmas I made her a picture of her and Edward. First I took the original poster of Edward and Bella. And then I added my niece's face to it. My niece was so excited. I gave it to her in a frame. My sister said she screamed when she opened hit. I was excited to give it to her. But that is some old news. Now onto some new news.

I am going to try out the Ace on Peanut today. He had his hooves trimmed today. Afterwards we put him in a stall and Peanut was rearing and acting all bad. So, now he is tied in the barn with his saddle on. I am going to work him a bit, then he is getting tied back up. For the rest of the week I am going to keep him in a separate pasture behind my house. I think he is getting too used to being around the other horses. I was also told today that Ace will only work for a few hours, and these rodeos last all day long. So, I hope that Peanut can calm down after getting to the rodeo and he won't need the Ace. I have my fingers crossed. I don't like drugging horses, especially when my kids are the ones riding them, it makes me nervous. I just need Peanut to behave how I know he can. Which is good. But lately he has been a little stinker. More wet saddle pads I guess. So, the plan this week. Separate Peanut from the herd, feed less grain and more hay, try out the Ace to see what it does to him. And ride Peanut every day this week. The Rodeo is at noon on Saturday so we will have plenty of time to show up and warm up and calm down. This might have been the reason for him going to the sale barn. But I know there is a good horse under all those nerves. Even if I have to haul him places twice a week, I will, anything to get him to calm down. I do have him on probiotics, for ulcers. So, I hope all this works out and Peanut can relax.

Peanut might have been in a lot of Rodeos and he remembers shooting out of the box in hot pursuit of a steer. I know it would be a pain, but you might want to haul him to events and do nothing with him until he gets reprogrammed. Just tie him up and let him stand. Of course, this will probably take a year or more. Crazy. But I would be real nervous putting my babies on him, since he is likely to take off, due to past hardwiring.

Aahhh it sounds like Peanut is ADHD.
Don't they have some kind of horsey ritalin?

I hope the Ace works - the safety of the kids is first of course.

Awesome job on the picture. And people are obsessed with twilight aren't they? LOL

Good luck with Peanut.

I have to take my horse off feed all together when we go some where important. I usually feed grain at night and hay in the mornings but when we are going somewhere, especially if there are children around, I won't feed her the night before or the morning we leave. Drops her energy level a little lower without meds.

You are the PHOTOSHOP QUEEN girl!!! I wish I had the 'effort' to sit down and just do it. You rock!

Hmmmm...like Tj and Mark said, he may be an old rodeo horse and is used to getting riled up when he leaves. Or it may just be new to him, and he will calm down after a bit of experience.

I know I am a day late on the Ace question, but I think that you should give it a try. Just know that it can be hard to get the dose right sometimes, and that too much makes them really sleepy, and that too little does absolutely nothing. Also...make sure to give it to him well before you leave, or it won't work at all.

I had to laugh at your vet!!! He looks like a vet from the PNW...lol!!! Just a laid back, mellow, outdoorsy kinda guy...teeheehee!!!

Oh, and that Twilight poster/picture??? I want one ...lol!!!! I still haven't seen the movie, but I did finish all of the books. :)

Good luck at the rodeo! Horse shows do not allow Ace, so just make sure it s legal to administer it and then "compete". Each event has their own rules and regulations. I've even been to small unrated schooling type shows where there have been drug testers from the state. It is a shame because some horses would be alot safer if you could take the edge off with some Ace! I wouldn't worry about 1/2cc being too much, I've seen horses misbehave on quite a bit more than that. I've got my fingers crossed that Peanut will behave for your cute little cowpokes :-)

I haven't read any of the Twilight books. Cool what you did for your neice, I wouldn't even know where to began to do that!

On to Peanut~I would defintely haul him and get him used to it. Not even do anything, just let him stand tied. He may have some bad memories and get anxious. It may take some time, but I think you can get him out of it. I with you on drugging them, especially with our kiddos. Sometimes Ace has the reverse effect on them, seen it once at a event.
Good luck!

Is it possible Peanut's back is bothering him? Our old guy started acting cranky and being naughty when riden, turned out he had five vertabre out and needed an adjustment.
Hope all goes well at the rodeo

Hey cool photoshop pic!! Not a clue on how to do those things so it is neat to see what someone with experience can do.

Poor Peanut! Take him off the grain sista! When Megan was little, she rode my most dependable horse and I still reduced her grain to about a handful-literally. Now that Peanut has gained some weight and is feeling better, it sounds like his real personality is coming out and that may be one of the reasons his previous owners kept him on the thin side.
But it sounds like you have a good game plan and the only thing you can do is go forward and try to make things work. He will come around-I have no doubt that you guys have the experience to fix him up, so he becomes quiet and solid.

I love reading about Peanut, but I have no suggestions. I hope all goes according to plan...

Peanut's making me a little worried for your little one's safety.
Can you just bring him along for the experience, but use another more reliable, calmer horse instead?
I would feel awful if something terrible happened. :(

I agree with what others have said about the ACE and being sure how much you need and how it affects Peanut BEFORE the rodeo.

Reminds me of how one time I was told to give my toddler twins Benadryl before an airplane trip. I'd never given them Benadryl before, but people assured me it would take the edge off and make my kids sleep during the flight.

It didn't work quite the way it was suppose to.
My twins became super hyper and were literally bouncing of the chairs, floor and walls of the airplane! It was the longest 3 hours on an airplane in my life! gah!!

Be careful, Andrea...
