Past Due

Today is my mare's due date. But do we have a foal on the ground.......nope, nada, not one. This mare is notorious for holding onto her babies for about two weeks after her due date. My father in law keeps joking with me about having an April Fool's day foal. The last foal we had born on April Fool's Day was crazy. So, I am hoping to avoid that date. Oh, Pearl, just have that foal already, you look so uncomfortable. The mares were getting so aggravated with the horse flies that were swarming them. With the warm weather we are getting, I guess it's bringing out some of the nasty bugs that we have down here. With today being Pearl's due date, you would think she would have a small bag of milk. But nothing. Not even a drop of milk in her non existent bag. With the last foal Pearl had, she bagged up 25 days before she had her foal. I am hoping this year that won't happen, because I do not want to wait one more month to see this foal. Just look at that foal, sitting a little to the right side. Her belly is super huge. Her last baby had been in her birth canal for too long and ended up with busted blood vessels in his eye. I hope that doesn't happen this time. Come on Pearl, let that baby go. Pearl is bred to Final Review, a cremello paint stallion. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for a buckskin paint foal. If she ever has the foal. I check on her every morning, just hoping that Pearl will surprise me this year. But there is never a foal on the ground. Sigh.......... But then there is this mare, Blaze. She is due March 25th. Blaze has been looking real uncomfortable for a week or so now. She holds her tail out like she is uncomfortable. Blaze is really aggravated with the horse flies too. But look at that huge dropped belly! That baby can come tomorrow, too, if it wants!! And you know what Blaze has? Milk! Yes, this mare is due after Pearl and she has a nice bag of milk. She isn't waxed over or anything, but I think by this time next week (which is her due date) we will have a little foal on the ground. I think Blaze will have a filly. Blaze has had two stud colts and three fillies. I am really excited to see her foal. Foals are so exciting. I just wish these two would get here already. I was really hoping that with this last cold front that we had come through here, I would have had at least one foal on the ground. We even went by a full moon with out having a foal born. Come on Mares!!! Show me the Babies!!! Both mares have huge bellies and look really uncomfortable. Another thing in common with these mares is that this will be the last time both mares are ever bred. I am not going to breed them any more. I want to ride them and enjoy them while they are both at the wonderful age of 15. So, ladies, we all want to see some babies!! Any one have any guesses on when these two might have their foals?

Check out the poll on the side bar to put in your votes for Pearl and Blazes foals!!! What do you think they will have, a colt or a filly?

So fun! I'm jealous. What a great post two babies will make. Do your kids just love the foals? I wish we had better luck with mares at Galloping Grace. I would love to have a baby out there for all the kids to enjoy.

I am glad I got to experience all of that before I lost Gracie, there is so much of it that is wonderful - alot of work too, but yes it is so neat wondering about color, sex, size and all of that.

2 boys. Maybe. You should start a pool.

Andrea, Old timer's around here say a colt is a month later in gestation than filly's so I'm betting on colts.
