Ozzie Update

Well, he has a torn Suspensory Ligament. It's torn below his ankle in his pastern. It looks all bowed. Especially after the vet shaved it. He is to stay in his stall for 2 months and then he can have short turn out time by himself. The bet took x-rays and an ultrasound. There aren't any broken bones, just torn ligament. Ozzie was a very good patient. He stood like a gentleman. The Vet was very good too. I called my farrier and he is going to be coming out on Monday when I get back to put a special shoe on Ozzie to help relieve some of the pressure on the heel. It was so nice to have a farrier call me right back after I left him a message and then he called the vet to get the whole scoop. Gotta love good communication.

So, Ozzie is on stall rest and no work at all for at least 6 months. Then it's back to basics for him. I am sure I will get a lot of hand walking done with him.

But I now must leave, I am running late to go and get my sister at the airport! We leave for our cruise tomorrow!!! I'll take lots of pictures!

By your description in the other post, Ozzie's injury sounded serious. The amount of time you have to wait for it to heal must be discouraging.

Have fun on your cruise.

I'm glad Ozzie's injury is treatable. Are you going to have to do water therapy or anything besides stall rest? I was afraid he had foundered the way you said he was lying down a lot.

Y'all have fun and we expect lots of pics!

Poor Ozzie. It would be tough for my guy to be on stall rest for two months. Have a great trip. Can't wait to hear about the fun time!

6 months really sucks. I'll give you my rememdy if you can't cold hose. Get a bunch of styrofoam cups and freeze water in them. Peel away the cup as the ice melts and rub it on the injury. Easier than attempting to strap ice packs and less messy than water, especially if it is muddy right now.

Poor Ozzie! I know all about torn ligaments. Thank goodness he won't need surgery, like I did, but I bet he's going to get fed up with stall rest for such a long time.

I hope he heals without too much pain and he gets good care while you're gone on your cruise vacation. Poor boy. :(

Sorry to hear that Ozzie has torn a suspensory. We have horses at the farm I work at that have done that. Lots of stall rest. I am sure you will do everything for him and he will come back ready to go!
Have a great time on your cruise!!

does he get pain meds? it sounds like he is in too much pain. he needs to have some relief. you cant rest when you are in constant pain, horse or human. do they have oxycontin or codeine for horses?

So sorry to hear that about Ozzie. I'm so thankful that Colt's injury was minor. My Ol' Man Toby did a serious tear about 8-9 years ago with 4-6 months stall rest...it was so hard.

Colt sure appreciates it when I come out to the barn and just visit and brush him...that really seems to help him get through the long day.

I'm sure you'll get him recuperated.
