Two Week Updated

Warning, this post contains a small rant! Our little foal is now three weeks old and I only have two week old pictures of her. She still doesn't' have a name. Every time I suggest something Mr. Cowboy says, "No way, I don't like that." I then ask him what he thinks and he never says anything. So, I might just have to start calling her what I want to call her and Mr. Cowboy won't have a say in it. No Name Filly is growing like a weed. The pictures above is from two weeks old. She is really muscular and is really playful. She and Belle will run around and play together. It's really cute. I think she is going to be a pretty big girl. Do you see that green bucket behind her? That is a Stable-Lyx bucket. I have had it out for the mares to lick on for the last 6 months of their pregnancies. Ever since Blaze had her filly, I have kept the lick inside with them. They are only kept in at night, so they are both able to lick on it all night. Well, the day before yesterday and yesterday, the filly had another small round of diarrhea. My father in law said to me this morning, "I think it's that lick. We have never given our horses that before and we have never had a baby with any problems. If I were you I would take that out of there."

He then went on to tell me how the Stable-Lyx was 16% protein and was not good for the foal. Little does he know that Omelene 300 is a 16% protein feed and that foals and lactating mares are supposed to be fed a higher protein of feed. And it's not all about the protein. You have to have a well rounded feed with vitamins and minerals. He has also said in past conversations, "Our babies just don't grow. They always take a bit longer to get tall and fill out. " Well, let me see, maybe it's because they don't have proper nutrients or the proper deworming schedule?

When I first moved here I was constantly told how I rode was wrong and that was not how things were done down here. Then my father in law went to a Natural Horsemanship Clinic (four years later) and called me on the way home and told me that I did know what I was talking about. Well, gee, thanks, I think! It takes coming from an "expert" not from some girl who learned it at some school. I do not claim to know everything, I am far from that, but I do know a little. I am just really tired of always being told I am wrong. It's really hard to get two different horse people together in the same barn. My father in law grew up just riding in a pasture while I grew up in a show ring. Two very different backgrounds. It just gets hard sometimes. Well, now that I have that over and done with, I feel a little better. That face makes me feel better too. My old man Brodi. This face helps me a lot too!She stands up for me when I get upset. She will fuss at the boys when they are making me upset. She is a good little Momma. Also on the news front, Big Cowpoke has safely landed in Ohio at his dad's house. Just 8 more days to go. And Pearl, oh that Pearl, still hasn't had her foal. I am still holding out for the 15th of April. My father in law says on the 13th. I really just wish that foal would get here so I could see it!

Good rant. I feel sorry for you. You obviously know what you're talking about with nutrition and training, it's just hard to change the minds of some older 'set in their ways' folks. Especially, men. Just keep doing it your way. Good luck on the foal name and hope the new one arrives soon.

Leadership by example girlfriend ;) Leadership by example. Smile, nod your head, and do what the h*ll you want with your horses anyways. Grow your babies the way you know is best, and stand strong with that same smile in place, and your horses will speak FOR you.

Cowpokette can not POSSIBLY get any cuter can she?? Wow she is getting so big!! I love reading about your kids!!

Rub Pearl's belly from me, scritch that sweet lil dickens filly (Hey!!!!!!! How about "BELLE OF THE BALL" for a name????? It has her favorite playmate in there!!)

And y'all have a HAPPY EASTER!!!

AMEN!!! I am always saying "I learnt this at university in Guelph" and people go "So what, I learned this from tradition, you know genghis khan used to practice it way back when he perfected horseback archery and such so it's gotta still work" The world was also still flat then remember ;P

Science over tradition any day!!!

That little filly reminds me of a little palimino paint foal I knew. I think it's name was moonpie or moonshine? Hey that would be a cute name, moonshine haha.

If you say the 15th, then the 15th it is!! Now that you got that little rant off your chest, I hope you're feeling better.

Rant away, my friend! Sounds like you are right on.
But maybe the minerals might be upsetting the foals tummy a little? Might be worth it to remove it and just see if the foal does better.
I like the name Moonshine, too.

Oh! Come on Pearl! Where's that baby already!!!

Oh..I am sorry to hear that. My father-in-law was a wonderful man, but he did think he knew most of the answers to questions that hadn't even been asked yet. Maybe it's a guy thing too..lol...

By the way, I love your hair. What it is about hair that can make us feel wonderful or awful depending and men don't care really...Michelle

that sweet old cute brodi..

my in laws and my parents and I all have that issue. my dad grew up with horses, but has been out of them for a while - we have that conversation all the time.

I feel your pain and I understand everything you are saying. When I was growing up there was one man who was the loudest horse know-it-all in the world. He later ran a beautiful leopard appaloosa stallion to death in a trail ride.
Do things your way and you will be much happier.

Oh sister, I don't know how you do it. My in-laws are 20 min. away and you know. Any way, cute puppy and cuter niece. She is adorable! Aren't you glad you have a girl? So fun and so cute.

Sometimes you just have to be sweet and kind, and do things your own way!

Love the hair - love the color - I'm going to have to use some of that georgous blonde color to cover some of my "natural" highlights that are coming in!!

Thank you for the easter blessing!

Your no name Filly sure has long legs. She looks like a Susie or Olivia to me. Cowpokets hair sure is getting long, very cute little gitl and I can see why Brodi cheers you up, he is very pretty dog. Thank you for coming by my pictures, I will be putting more up as soon as I can get my son over here with his scanner, have a nice week.

If you haven't come up with a name I'd call her "Charla" and you are valid these blazing cowboys lose time and time again around here with me on when a cow will calf. I've won $460.00 so far this calving season on them betting against me. For some odd reason they seem to think we don't know what we are talking about ???? hhhhm? Maybe I should reconsider who I'm talking to....
